A Very Special Portrait

14 x 18 Oil on linen
Private Commission

This painting was a very special commission and the second the family requested I paint.  The young man portrayed with his beautiful mother passed from cancer earlier this year.  The guitar I had painted was his.

I cannot express the emotional connection I felt to this young man the whole time I painted him.  I was even very sad to see the painting go, as though I was saying goodbye to an old friend I knew I'd never see again.  At the same time, I'm very humbled and honoured to have been asked to paint him and his mother in this special moment.

The title of this painting is "Always".  I had no idea what to call this painting.  As I was making the certificate of authenticity, I automatically typed Always without much thought.  After I saved the file, it was next to the file of the first painting I had created for the family, which was called, "I am with you."  It was definitely a goosebump moment as I had not planned this at all.

My hope his that this painting brings smiles and fond memories to the family.  Nothing can ever take away the pain of losing a loved one, but hopefully this brings some joy and comfort.

On an other note, I am working on a couple of wildlife pieces that I hope to share soon.  I hope you are all having a great day.  :-)

Le Nouveau Louvre Art Show at the GNO

JOHN LAPPA/SUDBURY STAR file photo The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario
is full to capacity for an earlier Nouveau Louvre exhibit.

Hi everyone!  The holidays are almost upon us and with this time of year comes the GNO's "Le Nouveau Louvre" art show!  There are many wonderful artists exhibiting this yearly show where part of the proceeds raise money to support the gallery for the year, and the rest goes to the artists.

Pieces of various styles and sizes are each sold  for $200.00.  Of this total, $75 goes to the gallery, and the artist keeps $125.00.  This is a FABULOUS win-win for both the gallery and the artists and is the right way to do a fundraiser using art! I will write about fundraising in my next post . . .

The Sudbury Star wrote an article on the GNO's fundraiser and you can read about it here

You can also have a look at the art currently available at the GNO's website.  I sold one but have a few others available.  Please have a look or stop by and buy some art! If you have someone on your list that you don't know what to buy for, giving an original work is a fabulous gift idea.  :-D

So, have a great time checking out Le Nouveau Louvre!  I will be back soon with a post on art and charities, which can be a very controversial subject.  See you soon!

Apple on Books Alla Prima Oil Painting

Apple on Books
6 x 6 Oil Alla Prima
Carole Rodrigue copyright ©2015

This newest painting was painted alla prima.  This is fancy art talk that means wet paint into wet paint.  Usually, I like to work with dry layers, but little studies are fun to do alla prima.  When you see an alla prima painting, you will see visible brush marks.  That's a natural part of the process because the paint is wet, therefore some brush strokes also remove paint as you're adding more.  This makes painting in this still challenging with certain colours that are more prone to doing this.  I always tone my supports, whether I'm painting onto dry layers as well as alla prima, but the toning sure does help with alla prima.  I would hate to see white showing through those brush marks.

I didn't make a video of this one.  I will be making more, but not every piece.  Then again, maybe I should make one for each piece.  I'll see.

If you enjoy this little gem, it's now up on eBay.  Have a great day! xo
