Croissant Alla Prima Still Life

Croissant
6 x 6 Oil (alla prima)
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

I feel as though my well is running dry lately and I often don't know what to paint.  This can become very frustrating as well as stressful.  I wake up in a panic some mornings because I feel uninspired at times.  Today was one of those days, and just when I was ready to give up, I spotted croissants on the counter.  Whew! I can't tell you what a relief it was to see something I could paint today.  I'm serious, these things really gnaw at me.

This is now up on eBay.

Bosc Pear No. 6 Alla Prima Daily Painting

Bosc Pear No. 6
7 x 5 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I had purchased many pears last week for the still life with the Indian tea pot, so I thought I use one of these today for a small alla prima painting.  I'm loving painting those pears! Now I need to try and think of something to paint for tomorrow . . .

Fall Gourds Daily Painting Still Life

Fall Gourds
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

These little gourds sit on my coffee table in a lovely fall arrangement.  Sometimes you can sit for hours wondering what to paint and the answer lies in front of you the whole time. This is the beauty of still life painting.  There's no need to trek through nasty weather to paint the perfect location under the perfect lighting, or patiently taking thousands of photos to find the right pose while photographing animals who refuse to stay still.  I've done both and enjoyed it, but my heart still lies in still life.  I do plan on some plain air painting soon though, even though I've been saying it for ages it seems.  I will get to it some day.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy this one which is now up on eBay.

Apple Fairy Daily Painting

Apple Fairy
10 x 8 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's painting is a garden fairy that's been in my garden for several years now.  I've always wanted to paint her and I don't know what took so long.  Apples, of course, are in season so what better subject to complement my fairy?

If you enjoy this one, you can click here to view the eBay auction.

Royal Albert Tea Cup and Lemon Daily Painting

Royal Albert & Lemon
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm back.  I took a week off from painting last week getting ready for and giving art workshops to about 75 students from all over the province of Ontario.  The event, Vision Art, (sorry, link in French only) was held at Laurentian University in Sudbury and put on by the Conseil Scolaire Catholique du Nouvel Ontario for over 200 students.  Activities took place over a three day period and I must say that I was so impressed with the talent the students exhibited.  I was also very honoured to be selected to be on this team, instructing art to our youth, our future leaders. Each and every one of those kids were amazing and it was a real joy to work with them.

Now, my first painting this week was inspired by a Royal Albert tea cup I found at a vintage shop in Toronto's Distillery District.  It was exactly what I had been looking for so I couldn't pass it up when I saw it.  Who could leave behind such a beautiful cup?

This is now up on eBay for bids if you're interested.  Thanks for stopping by!

Bosc Pears Alla Prima Oil Still Life

Bosc Pears No. 3
8 x 10 Oil, alla prima
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm working on a larger commission this week, a 36 x 36 oil still life of one single bosc pear.  I'm still working on it but while waiting for paint to dry today, I thought I'd do a little 8 x 10 of some of the pears I have. I just love doing these bosc pears, and I'm thinking of experimenting with some gold leafing with these soon.  After this commission I'll give it a try and see how it goes, but I have some wonderful ideas for adding gold leaf to these.

I hope you like this one.  It is now up on eBay.  Have a great weekend!

Apples & Books Still Life Alla Prima Painting

Apples & Books
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This still life was such a joy to paint! I've painted the last couple of pieces on Richeson gesso panels and I love working on these.  Taking good photos is another issue.  Because of the smooth texture of the support, it doesn't matter which camera I use and how much I try, I keep getting a glare.  I think I'll try a lighter painting next . . .  This one is now up on eBay.  Thanks for looking!

Figs, Daily Still Life

Figs
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Though I'd wanted to, I had never painted figs until today.  Every time I wanted to get some to paint, the stores never had any.  For some reason, they're hard to come by around here. I found one box at a store on Saturday, but they weren't too healthy looking. I gave up again.  Then, as luck would have it, I found a box full of beautiful, perfect figs in another store so I scooped them up! So there you have it, figs.  I've been eating a lot of figs this week, with a little honey.  They are so good.  This one is now up on eBay.

Egg Still Life

Egg
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I had originally had another painting in mind for today, but being an impulsive person, I painted an egg instead.  I was just inspired to do this, so when I get these impulses, I usually follow.  That's a fun part of being an artist, obeying your whimsical nature.  I hope you enjoy this one.  It's now up on eBay.

Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Tomatoes, Onion, & Bottle
8 x 10 Oil

SOLD

Summertime has cut somewhat into my painting time but I did manage these two as well last week.  The first one with the teapot is now up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of only $49.99,  and the other one was sold within an hour of the painting being completed and is on its way to its new home in California.  I can't tell you how much fun it is to sell something while the paint is still wet! So, don't miss your chance on the teacup.  If you want it, you can click here to see it on eBay.  Have a great day!

Red Apples Daily Painting

Red Apples No. 2
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

These apples have been sitting here for about a week and I needed to hurry and paint them before they end up spoiling or being eaten. A lot of the fruit here get painted before they ever get eaten.  I hope to paint at least three more this week.  Company's expected tomorrow until Friday, but I am going to try to squeeze in a few hours Wednesday and Thursday to get some painting done.  I would just get too antsy sitting so close to the studio and not paint.  Have a great day everyone, and thanks for stopping by.  :-)

Apple No. 4 Daily Painting

Apple No. 4 (unframed)
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

My painting for today is a simple apple on a napkin.  I also added a photo of it framed just to show how it looks in the frame.  It's a tromp l'oeuil and I love how once framed, it looks as though you could reach in and pull out the apple and napkin.  They seem to float inside the frame.  This is also the same effect I created with "Return to Sender", my package painting which was inspired by Claudio Bravo.  Bravo was the master of paper, fabric, and package paintings.

I also started my rough sketch in oil for my larger painting which will be exhibited at the end of August.  At this stage, I'm still open to changing some things in the layout and am toying with another idea for something that could be added.  I'll decide by tomorrow.  Tonight, I'm going to start laying colour on the background and the crow.  I can't tell you how excited I am to be painting a crow! Keep stopping by because new work will be coming next week and I will post progress shots of this crow piece.  Have a great weekend!

Antique Whiskey Jug & Apples Daily Painting

Antique Whiskey Jug & Apples
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This whiskey jug has been sitting in my studio collecting dust for years.  It has been very much neglected, I must say, and I think it's high time I started painting it more.  I absolutely love how it looks in paintings so I can't say why I haven't painted it more often.  I've visualized so many different paintings with it in mind yet have never gotten around to any of them.  So, here's to starting to paint this jug more often!

If you like this one, it is now up on eBay for auction.

Wax Paper, Shell, & Silver Daily Painting

Wax Paper, Shell, & Silver
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's painting is a study of wax paper.  I'm a great admirer of the work of Sadie Valeri who often uses wax paper in her work.  I thought I'd give it a try in this piece.  What I've learned is that wax paper is oh so much more challenging than it looks.  While this is only a quick study painted in one day, it is a subject I plan on revisiting in the future and to give it much more time in order to truly capture all of the small intricate details and variation of colour and form in wax paper. This was a tough challenge but a worthwhile one.  Every time I learn something while painting, it's a great session.

This is now up for auction on eBay.  There are also close up shots there that you can view by clicking here.

Lemon & Finger Bowl Daily Painting

Lemon & Finger Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's painting is a lemon with a finger bowl.  It's been a while since I painted a lemon so I figured it was time I did.  I set up my props with natural back lighting, as I enjoy doing so much.  I often paint with artificial light for some of my work, especially chiaroscuro, but natural lighting also brings  something to a painting which artificial light can't.  There's a certain subtlety in natural lighting that I find calming and it works really well for me and my style.

If you like this one, you can click here to view on eBay and to place a bid.  There are also close up shots on eBay.  See you tomorrow!

Bottle & Green Apple

First, I'd like to start off wishing everyone a safe and happy Canada Day! It's a gorgeous day here and I'm heading out to partake in some local festivities.  I hope you all enjoy your day also my Canadian friends!

I painted this little treasure late last night knowing there wouldn't be much time to paint today.  It's now listed up on eBay with bids starting at only $24.00.

Enjoy your day everyone and hopefully I do get to paint some more either later tonight or tomorrow.  :-)

Silver & Cherry, Daily Painting

Silver & Cherry
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

With summer now here, summer fruit are everywhere and so are cherries.  This little tea goblet is always a joy to paint along with anything else, especially if it's red.  The background is more of a dark olive green.  With monitors, it's often hard to get accurate colour and they can appear different on various monitors.  The greener background really compliments the cherry.

Peonies are also in full bloom right now, so I have an itch to paint one.  I've got several ideas brewing right now so I'm really looking forward to doing something with a peony!

If you like this painting, the above link will take you to the eBay auction where it is listed for only $25.00 US.  Have a great day!

Bosc Pears, Daily Painting

Bosc Pears
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

These gorgeous Bosc pears were sitting around the house and became today's subject.  I love painting pears in the classical style.  To me, there's something that creates such an atmosphere in pears painted this way.  I guess that's why I do still life also.  There's always the opportunity to take mundane, ordinary objects and express their beauty through paint by focusing on the intensity of the colors, as well as the lighting.  Such strong contrasts create drama and atmosphere, bringing out the beauty in something so simple as fruit.

I hope you like this one! It's up for auction and the link is above underneath the photo.  I'll be back tomorrow, and thanks for stopping by.  <3

Teacup & Strawberries Daily Painting

Teacup & Strawberries
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I couldn't resist painting more strawberries today.  I must admit that for a daily painting, this one took a long time to paint and ate up most of the day and well into the evening.  There was a lot of detail to get into this painting.  Now I'm off to varnish paintings, and then maybe finally rest.  Have a great night! If you like this one, you can click on the above link to bid on eBay.  :-)
