Still Life with Lemons and Water

Lemon Water
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue 2015

This painting was started Sunday and completed today.  As I said, I was taking more time with my work now rather than do daily paintings.  I'm much more satisfied with my paintings now even though they're still done relatively quick.  With a painting such as this one, I would really prefer at least one full week's worth of work to refine details.  This one was detail intensive but I had to limit myself.  I might still do a painting in a day every now and then, but for now, I'm happy with this.  I hope you are too.

This is now up on eBay.

Cup & Lemons

Cup & Lemons
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

The weather was so beautiful all last week but turned brutally cold today, with gusting northern winds.  It was a perfect day for tea with maybe a bit of lemon.  Actually, I never drink lemon in my tea but I do so love to paint them.  I love so many things with lemon, lemon meringue pie, cakes, cookies, lotions, soaps . . . What's not to love about zingy fresh lemons? Their bright cheeriness warms one on a winter's day, so they did manage to warm me even without adding any to my tea.

If you like this one, it's now up on eBay.  I think I have a lot of apples laying around the kitchen . . .

Tangerines & Bowl Daily Oil Painting

Tangerines & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It's that time of year when tangerines are everywhere, so it's only natural that they should pop up in art, mine included.  I love them combined with this bowl.  This is now up for auction on eBay.  And did I ever mention how I usually post close up crop shots on eBay?  Have a great day folks! :-)

Royal Albert Tea Cup and Lemon Daily Painting

Royal Albert & Lemon
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm back.  I took a week off from painting last week getting ready for and giving art workshops to about 75 students from all over the province of Ontario.  The event, Vision Art, (sorry, link in French only) was held at Laurentian University in Sudbury and put on by the Conseil Scolaire Catholique du Nouvel Ontario for over 200 students.  Activities took place over a three day period and I must say that I was so impressed with the talent the students exhibited.  I was also very honoured to be selected to be on this team, instructing art to our youth, our future leaders. Each and every one of those kids were amazing and it was a real joy to work with them.

Now, my first painting this week was inspired by a Royal Albert tea cup I found at a vintage shop in Toronto's Distillery District.  It was exactly what I had been looking for so I couldn't pass it up when I saw it.  Who could leave behind such a beautiful cup?

This is now up on eBay for bids if you're interested.  Thanks for stopping by!

Mango, Alla Prima Oil Still Life

Mango
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Yes, it's true, I haven't painted many dailies lately.  I've been painting other larger pieces as well as working on this commission pictured below.  I'm somewhat easing back into the dailies again starting with this alla prima mango.  It is now up on eBay.

The painting below is a large piece that was a private commission.  It is now on its way to its new home and I hope my client will love it more in person.  There's a deep, rich red around the pear that the photo doesn't capture.  The combination of the colours in the pear, along with this dark red that fades to black is absolutely beautiful.  I plan on doing more similar fruits in the future using 18K gold leaf.

I hope you enjoy these two pieces!

Bosc Pears Alla Prima Oil Still Life

Bosc Pears No. 3
8 x 10 Oil, alla prima
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm working on a larger commission this week, a 36 x 36 oil still life of one single bosc pear.  I'm still working on it but while waiting for paint to dry today, I thought I'd do a little 8 x 10 of some of the pears I have. I just love doing these bosc pears, and I'm thinking of experimenting with some gold leafing with these soon.  After this commission I'll give it a try and see how it goes, but I have some wonderful ideas for adding gold leaf to these.

I hope you like this one.  It is now up on eBay.  Have a great weekend!

Blue Bottle Alla Prima Still Life

Blue Bottle & Fruit
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This blue vase caught my eye a while back while browsing in a store and I knew it had to come home with me.  It's been waiting to be painted for a while now, and I'm so happy I finally got around to using it in combination with fruits that were in the kitchen.  This painting was painted alla prima, in one sitting.  It's now up on eBay if you're interested, and there are close up shots there as well. Thanks for looking!

Lemon & Bowl Still Life Painting

Lemon & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's daily is a lemon with a bowl.  I love using this rich cobalt blue with lemons.  I have a large cobalt blue glass vase that I'm just dying to use in a larger still life.  That will come soon, but for now I've got a few more dailies to work on this week and then perhaps I'll allow myself the luxury of working on a larger piece at a leisurely pace.  If you like this one, you can click here to bid on eBay.  Opening bids start at only $50.00.  Thanks for looking!

Apple No. 4 Daily Painting

Apple No. 4 (unframed)
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

My painting for today is a simple apple on a napkin.  I also added a photo of it framed just to show how it looks in the frame.  It's a tromp l'oeuil and I love how once framed, it looks as though you could reach in and pull out the apple and napkin.  They seem to float inside the frame.  This is also the same effect I created with "Return to Sender", my package painting which was inspired by Claudio Bravo.  Bravo was the master of paper, fabric, and package paintings.

I also started my rough sketch in oil for my larger painting which will be exhibited at the end of August.  At this stage, I'm still open to changing some things in the layout and am toying with another idea for something that could be added.  I'll decide by tomorrow.  Tonight, I'm going to start laying colour on the background and the crow.  I can't tell you how excited I am to be painting a crow! Keep stopping by because new work will be coming next week and I will post progress shots of this crow piece.  Have a great weekend!

Antique Whiskey Jug & Apples Daily Painting

Antique Whiskey Jug & Apples
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This whiskey jug has been sitting in my studio collecting dust for years.  It has been very much neglected, I must say, and I think it's high time I started painting it more.  I absolutely love how it looks in paintings so I can't say why I haven't painted it more often.  I've visualized so many different paintings with it in mind yet have never gotten around to any of them.  So, here's to starting to paint this jug more often!

If you like this one, it is now up on eBay for auction.

Lemon & Finger Bowl Daily Painting

Lemon & Finger Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's painting is a lemon with a finger bowl.  It's been a while since I painted a lemon so I figured it was time I did.  I set up my props with natural back lighting, as I enjoy doing so much.  I often paint with artificial light for some of my work, especially chiaroscuro, but natural lighting also brings  something to a painting which artificial light can't.  There's a certain subtlety in natural lighting that I find calming and it works really well for me and my style.

If you like this one, you can click here to view on eBay and to place a bid.  There are also close up shots on eBay.  See you tomorrow!

Tiffany Painting and La Cloche Award

Tiffany Box & Charm No. 2
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014
Private commission, SOLD

This painting was commissioned for a little baby girl that is yet to be born.  It's a pretty special gift so I am honoured that I was asked to paint this.  I really hope this will be treasured for a long time as  this baby grows into adulthood, knowing this gift was planned even before her birth by someone who already loves her.  I just love it when gifts have such special meaning and especially if I have something to do with it.  As the saying goes, I get the warm fuzzies.  :-)

Also, tonight was the artists' reception at the La Cloche art show in Whitefish Falls.  I'm very happy to announce that "Magpie & Apples" placed 1st in the oil category. Yay!  ~insert big toothy grin~

The show this year is spectacular! Every year, it seems the bar is raised as more and more new talent joins the roster of juried artists. There are so many fantastic pieces in the show and it is something to see if you're in the area.  The show opens tomorrow, June 5 and runs until Sunday, June  13.  Northern Ontario is home to some of the greatest artists and this show proves it.

I'm closing off with two photos from tonight's reception, one of me accepting my prize, and another of me with my winning painting.  Thanks so much for having a look, and have a great weekend everyone!

Bosc Pears No. 2

Bosc Pears No. 2
8 x 10 Oil on linen
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I decided to take a break from daily paintings today so I could paint myself a little something for my dining room.  After I completed yesterday's Bosc pear, I started this one last night and completed it today.  It's painted on linen and will look absolutely fabulous in one of my frames.  I can't wait to hang it! Needless to say it isn't for sale.  I hope everyone has a great weekend, and happy Canada Day weekend to everyone here at home!

Bosc Pear Daily Painting

Pear No. 4
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

There's something about painting Bosc pears that I just love, almost as much as I love painting apples.  The way they glow their golden splendour against a dark background gives them a classical feel that I absolutely love.  I love the feel of them so much that I'm starting to paint one just for myself.  I really must have one in my dining room.  This one, however, is up for auction on eBay in case you would like one also.  Bids start at only $25.00.

Silver & Cherry, Daily Painting

Silver & Cherry
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

With summer now here, summer fruit are everywhere and so are cherries.  This little tea goblet is always a joy to paint along with anything else, especially if it's red.  The background is more of a dark olive green.  With monitors, it's often hard to get accurate colour and they can appear different on various monitors.  The greener background really compliments the cherry.

Peonies are also in full bloom right now, so I have an itch to paint one.  I've got several ideas brewing right now so I'm really looking forward to doing something with a peony!

If you like this painting, the above link will take you to the eBay auction where it is listed for only $25.00 US.  Have a great day!

Magpie & Apples Still Life

Magpie and Apples
30 x 20 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

At last, I'm getting to post this painting that I had started months ago.  It's finally done and on its way to the La Cloche art show.  Hopefully it makes it in!

While we were in Banff last fall, we decided to take a ride out to Field, B.C. and this is where I had photographed this magpie.  There were several of them hanging out at the tourist stop, hoping for handouts from all the visitors.  I had never seen this specific magpie and found them to be such a beautiful bird with all of their shimmering colours.  I especially loved this one, looking straight at me,  fearless.

Last night was also the RBC function at the Grand Art Show and many people came and enjoyed themselves for a couple of hours.  It was certainly a great even and I met many wonderful people.  I managed to get a couple of photos to share so here is one of them, showing just how well this event turned out.  RBC is a sponsor for the Grand Art Show and regularly supports the arts!  Thank you RBC!!!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and thanks for stopping by!

Bosc Pears, Daily Painting

Bosc Pears
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

These gorgeous Bosc pears were sitting around the house and became today's subject.  I love painting pears in the classical style.  To me, there's something that creates such an atmosphere in pears painted this way.  I guess that's why I do still life also.  There's always the opportunity to take mundane, ordinary objects and express their beauty through paint by focusing on the intensity of the colors, as well as the lighting.  Such strong contrasts create drama and atmosphere, bringing out the beauty in something so simple as fruit.

I hope you like this one! It's up for auction and the link is above underneath the photo.  I'll be back tomorrow, and thanks for stopping by.  <3

Teacup & Strawberries Daily Painting

Teacup & Strawberries
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I couldn't resist painting more strawberries today.  I must admit that for a daily painting, this one took a long time to paint and ate up most of the day and well into the evening.  There was a lot of detail to get into this painting.  Now I'm off to varnish paintings, and then maybe finally rest.  Have a great night! If you like this one, you can click on the above link to bid on eBay.  :-)

Apple, Egg, & Copper Daily Painting

Apple, Egg, & Copper
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

While I still had these beautiful and colourful Gala apples, I decided to paint another along with some copper, and an eggshell.  I should've called this one "Apple Pie", but I kept it simple.  There are other close up photos on eBay.  If you like this one, click the above link to bid, or just to see the other photos.  All of the paintings I list have close up photos.

Thanks for looking, and have a great day!
