A Very Special Portrait

14 x 18 Oil on linen
Private Commission

This painting was a very special commission and the second the family requested I paint.  The young man portrayed with his beautiful mother passed from cancer earlier this year.  The guitar I had painted was his.

I cannot express the emotional connection I felt to this young man the whole time I painted him.  I was even very sad to see the painting go, as though I was saying goodbye to an old friend I knew I'd never see again.  At the same time, I'm very humbled and honoured to have been asked to paint him and his mother in this special moment.

The title of this painting is "Always".  I had no idea what to call this painting.  As I was making the certificate of authenticity, I automatically typed Always without much thought.  After I saved the file, it was next to the file of the first painting I had created for the family, which was called, "I am with you."  It was definitely a goosebump moment as I had not planned this at all.

My hope his that this painting brings smiles and fond memories to the family.  Nothing can ever take away the pain of losing a loved one, but hopefully this brings some joy and comfort.

On an other note, I am working on a couple of wildlife pieces that I hope to share soon.  I hope you are all having a great day.  :-)

New Video and a Giveaway!

Happy New Year my friends!  In the video below you will find my first completed painting for 2016 and you can watch it's creation in this short demonstration. I'm having a blast recording these speed painting videos and will keep making more.  I'm still learning the ropes in movie making and they're far from perfect, but I'm still putting them out there.  I'm learning the ropes as I go along. :-D

I'm also very excited to announce a contest I'm holding.  For all those who subscribe to my newsletter and for current newsletter subscribers, your name will be entered in a draw to win the above original oil painting on June 1st, 2016! Current subscribers need to apply again; your names will be automatically entered.  I will then hold a new draw every six months, so it's a pretty good idea to remain subscribed.  ;-)

I have so many exciting plans for this coming year and I'm just getting started.  Be sure to get my newsletter so you can stay up to date!

For now, I have new work I need to get to so I'd better run.  Stay tunes, and by the way, you can see the painting in the video HERE as well as place an eBay bid HERE.

Thanks for stopping by!

Fall Pumpkins Oil Still Life

6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Hi everyone!  It's that time of year with fall colours and fall harvests, which of course, inspires art.  What's not to love at this time of year with all of the rich warm tones which in a way betray the approaching cold and greys of winter.

This painting is a little 6 x 6.  I keep wanting to paint larger pieces with pumpkins and try various still life arrangements, but can never completely settle on one to paint.  So, I satisfied the need to paint by doing a small quick study.   Sometimes that's all it takes.  Maybe next year I'll have the larger painting that I want.

Right now, I have violins on my mind.  One violin painting sits on my easel waiting to be finished, but I have the urge to start another fun violin piece with an added special something.  I've been asked by many people many times to paint this special something and now I feel the need.  I'm inspired.  I gotta do it.

Until then, take care everyone and hopefully I'll be back really soon with that special painting, but I don't want to rush.  :-)

Apple on Books Alla Prima Oil Painting

Apple on Books
6 x 6 Oil Alla Prima
Carole Rodrigue copyright ©2015

This newest painting was painted alla prima.  This is fancy art talk that means wet paint into wet paint.  Usually, I like to work with dry layers, but little studies are fun to do alla prima.  When you see an alla prima painting, you will see visible brush marks.  That's a natural part of the process because the paint is wet, therefore some brush strokes also remove paint as you're adding more.  This makes painting in this still challenging with certain colours that are more prone to doing this.  I always tone my supports, whether I'm painting onto dry layers as well as alla prima, but the toning sure does help with alla prima.  I would hate to see white showing through those brush marks.

I didn't make a video of this one.  I will be making more, but not every piece.  Then again, maybe I should make one for each piece.  I'll see.

If you enjoy this little gem, it's now up on eBay.  Have a great day! xo

New Video

I hope everyone's been well!  I've been super busy at this end but have been finding time to paint.  I promise to show a new piece very soon!

In the mean time, I created this little video with a compilation of some of my paintings.  Most are oil, some are daily paintings, some are bigger works, some are acrylic, and some pastel.  Yes, it's fun to work in various mediums, but oil is still my favorite.

There's also a speed painting video that I'm planning as soon as I have some logistics figured out.  Once I do, they'll be up and I'm also planning perhaps tutorials, such as an e-book with accompanying video.  I've got so many plans and I hope to implement these soon.

Please have a look at my video, give it a like, and PLEASE SHARE!  Yes, artists need you, art lovers,  to share our work.  I thank you all for stopping by and I'll be back soon! Until then, take care!

Clementines and My Favourite Blue

Clementines & Cobalt Blue Dish
8 x 10 Oil
©2015 Carole Rodrigue

Cobalt blue is my favorite of all the blues.  Nothing compares to rich depth of blue you get when you apply it on a canvas or panel.  I also love it mixed with other colors for greys and blacks.  Nothing compares.  It is the most expensive of the blue paints also, but I always splurge with my blue because, well, I just love it.  That's all.  I love it with lemons too, as well as with the rich orange of these clementines.

I hope you love it too.  It's on eBay now with a couple of other pieces.  Have a look here.  And thanks for stopping by.  Have a great Easter weekend and Passover.  <3

Lemons & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

I love to paint lemons, I cannot lie! I still hate how the Blogger photo uploader makes photos look.  This photo looks much better on my website and on eBay.  Psst, there are close up shots on eBay too. I attached the link to my "Me" page below the photo.

But it is true, lemons have become a favorite of mine to paint.  I've got a couple of larger projects on the go right now, but I think I'm going to paint a much larger still life with lemons.  Like a 24 x 24, or maybe even larger.  That would be something!

Hope you like this one!

Peony & Cup Daily Painting

Peony & Cup
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Hi everyone, I decided to paint a daily and bring a taste of summer during the mid-January cold.  I'm dreaming of warmer June days when the peonies are in bloom so I brought the dream to life.  I don't paint the dailies often anymore, so this is a rare treat for art collectors.  I hope you enjoy this one!

Greek Vase Still Life

Greek Vase
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

This painting is of a handmade classical Greek reproduction vase which dates back to over 500 BC.  It was purchased in Greece by my husband and I love having it in our home.  The flip side has a different image, a woman.  I will definitely paint the other side some day.

This one is now up on eBay.

Onion & Silver Oil Still Life

Onion & Silver
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Welcome to 2015 and my first painting of the year! Last year, I painted over 92 paintings, mostly small works, but a few were larger works that took several weeks to create. For this year, I decided I need a slight change in direction. By this I mean that I won't be working on "daily" paintings anymore. Instead, I'll mostly paint 8 x 10 sizes and will work on these for 2-3 days, trying to produce 2-3 pieces a week.

Rushing to get through a piece in a day wasn't cutting it for me anymore and beginning to take the enjoyment out of the process. I would rather take more time and enjoy what I'm creating rather than groan just to get something done by the end of the day. These are still studies done in less time than I normally take to work on full pieces.

For this reason, my prices will go up slightly higher for the paintings I list on eBay. The prices are still waaayyyy below what I should be charging just the same. Hopefully, this will help me create better pieces as well. My eBay pieces are still a fantastic way for anyone to be able to afford original oil paintings for a bargain price.

May everyone have a great year and thank you for being a part of this artistic journey with me.  I appreciate every person who takes the time to come and look at my art.  Many blessings to all of you!  <3

Pomegranate & Copper Alla Prima

Pomegranate & Copper
8 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It dawned on me today how quickly this year is coming to a close.  I'm not sure how many more paintings I will be able to create in 2014 but I'm hoping to do several more in the next couple of weeks.  This one was painted today, alla prima, and I found the pomegranate to be one of the prettiest I've seen in a while.  The red was vibrant and the whole fruit just perfect.  It's now up on eBay.

Tangerine Alla Prima Still Life with Video Demonstration

6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today was a productive day.  The dog had her walk and I painted this little tangerine, AND made a little video demonstration using still photos.  My camera doesn't record, so I'm stuck for now.  :-s

This painting is now up for bids on eBay and you can also view the video on YouTube by clicking the embedded video below.

Tangerines & Bowl Daily Oil Painting

Tangerines & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It's that time of year when tangerines are everywhere, so it's only natural that they should pop up in art, mine included.  I love them combined with this bowl.  This is now up for auction on eBay.  And did I ever mention how I usually post close up crop shots on eBay?  Have a great day folks! :-)

Santa Baby II Christmas Daily Painting

Santa Baby II
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue 2014

Hi everyone.  I realize that it's not yet Thanksgiving in the US, but I still went ahead and painted something Christmassy.  The reason is, this will be listed for one week, then with shipping, this is the perfect time if someone wants it for decorating this year. Or a gift.  :-)

I painted a Santa Baby painting last year which is in a collection in Texas.  Each year, I will paint one Santa Baby piece only, so this is it for this year.  I'm making this theme a tradition.  I might paint another Christmas themed piece, but this is it for Santa Baby.  Will he be making it down your chimney?  He's now available on eBay.

Bosc Pear Daily Painting

Bosc Pear No. 5
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This little pear was painted today, alla prima.  I love painting pears, especially bosc pears.  Their color lends to a classical look that beats other pears.  I love their sexy shapes and how they sometimes appear to have a curvy bottom. This one didn't, but I love the long progression to the top of the pear, appearing ever so graceful. It's now up on eBay.

Also, I created this short video slide show of a painting I had created last year.  So far, I'm unable to film movies but I will try to create slide shows that show a painting's progression. I painted quite differently then as I'm always changing and evolving.  Now I always tone my canvases and supports. Have a look at my video on YouTube, and I hope you like it.  Please leave a comment on YouTube if you wish.  Thanks!

Basket of Apples Daily Painting

Basket of Apples
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Since fall is at our doorstep, I was inspired to paint something in a basket.  Of course apples are always a delightful subject and certainly abundant at this time of year.  This is now up on eBay.

I'm still working on the large commission painting but I'll still try to paint a couple more dailies.  I hope you enjoyed this one and thanks for looking!

Pears, Alla Prima Daily Still Life Painting

8 x 10 Oil alla prima
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Hello everyone, I was in the mood for painting pears lately so today was the day.  I was originally going to paint only the red pears, but decided to mix it up a little, and I'm very pleased with the way this turned out.  I need to paint some more pears for a charity fundraiser next month.  Pears are always such a pleasure to paint.  If you like this one, it is now up for auction on eBay with a low bid of $49.99. Thanks for looking!

Figs, Daily Still Life

8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Though I'd wanted to, I had never painted figs until today.  Every time I wanted to get some to paint, the stores never had any.  For some reason, they're hard to come by around here. I found one box at a store on Saturday, but they weren't too healthy looking. I gave up again.  Then, as luck would have it, I found a box full of beautiful, perfect figs in another store so I scooped them up! So there you have it, figs.  I've been eating a lot of figs this week, with a little honey.  They are so good.  This one is now up on eBay.

Magpie & Apples Still Life

Magpie and Apples
30 x 20 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

At last, I'm getting to post this painting that I had started months ago.  It's finally done and on its way to the La Cloche art show.  Hopefully it makes it in!

While we were in Banff last fall, we decided to take a ride out to Field, B.C. and this is where I had photographed this magpie.  There were several of them hanging out at the tourist stop, hoping for handouts from all the visitors.  I had never seen this specific magpie and found them to be such a beautiful bird with all of their shimmering colours.  I especially loved this one, looking straight at me,  fearless.

Last night was also the RBC function at the Grand Art Show and many people came and enjoyed themselves for a couple of hours.  It was certainly a great even and I met many wonderful people.  I managed to get a couple of photos to share so here is one of them, showing just how well this event turned out.  RBC is a sponsor for the Grand Art Show and regularly supports the arts!  Thank you RBC!!!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and thanks for stopping by!

Bosc Pears, Daily Painting

Bosc Pears
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

These gorgeous Bosc pears were sitting around the house and became today's subject.  I love painting pears in the classical style.  To me, there's something that creates such an atmosphere in pears painted this way.  I guess that's why I do still life also.  There's always the opportunity to take mundane, ordinary objects and express their beauty through paint by focusing on the intensity of the colors, as well as the lighting.  Such strong contrasts create drama and atmosphere, bringing out the beauty in something so simple as fruit.

I hope you like this one! It's up for auction and the link is above underneath the photo.  I'll be back tomorrow, and thanks for stopping by.  <3
