Mango, Alla Prima Oil Still Life

5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Yes, it's true, I haven't painted many dailies lately.  I've been painting other larger pieces as well as working on this commission pictured below.  I'm somewhat easing back into the dailies again starting with this alla prima mango.  It is now up on eBay.

The painting below is a large piece that was a private commission.  It is now on its way to its new home and I hope my client will love it more in person.  There's a deep, rich red around the pear that the photo doesn't capture.  The combination of the colours in the pear, along with this dark red that fades to black is absolutely beautiful.  I plan on doing more similar fruits in the future using 18K gold leaf.

I hope you enjoy these two pieces!

Pear, Daily Oil Painting

Pear No 3
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today I was compelled to paint a pear, backlit by window light.  I love painting backlit scenes.  It's something I've always done, even back when I was painting horses regularly.  There's something about backlighting that is dramatic and captivating.  I hope you enjoy this one, if you do, the link for the eBay auction is in the painting's description.  Have a great evening!  <3

Royal Albert China Teacup Daily Painting

Cup of Earl III
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue 2014

I wasn't going to paint anything today seeing as it's Victoria Day here in Canada, but I couldn't help myself.  I got this gorgeous Royal Albert teacup the other day and just could not put off painting it any longer! And how fitting is it to paint a Royal Albert cup on this day of Queen Victoria's birthday? Prince Charles and Camilla are also in the country visiting.  So, Today was as good a day as any to paint this.

Pear Daily Oil Painting

Pear No. 2
7 x 5 Oil
Carole Rodrigue copyright 2014

Here is the first Daily Painting of 2014! This one is available through eBay for a very low opening bid of $0.99 only.  It is painted in the classical realism style, but alla prima.

Many of you have asked what is a daily painting. Daily paintings are an exercise and also part of a movement that was started several years ago by Duane Keiser. Since then many artists have participated in this movement.  Many quickly give up or do it only temporarily as an exercise, and many have gone on to develop successful careers as daily painters, such as Abbey Ryan.

Daily paintings are quick studies completed in less than a day.  The purpose of the exercise for me is to hone my skills, force myself to keep working in the studio, and to keep my creative energy in a constant flow.  Through these exercises, I have noticed development in my art as well as other areas of my life.  Let me note that there is a huge difference between a daily painting and a painting that has taken many hours and days to develop.  This is why you will see a difference in price also.  Works which are not daily paintings take much more work, have more detail, and have several layers of paint to achieve the  desired result.

So there you have it, the daily painting movement explained really briefly.  Please don't hesitate to ask any questions.  I'm always pleased to answer!

Globe Grapes & Pear Daily Painting

Globe Grapes & Pear
5 x 7 Oil on hard board
Carole Rodrigue Copyright 2013

Today's daily painting was thanks to a case of pears that was purchased last week, as well as globe grapes bought by mistake.  Does anyone still eat grapes with seeds? Either way, they made for a wonderful subject for today's painting.  If you like this little treasure, you can click here to bid on eBay.
