Aussie Pastel Pet Portrait

11 x 14 oil on panel
Carole Rodrigue ©2018

This pretty girl is Luna, an Aussie who I had the pleasure of painting recently.  When I was commissioned to paint her, I fell in love with her inquisitive, expressive eyes.  She just looks like a dog who is waiting for the next fun instruction.

Her pet portrait was painted with oils and I chose to do her on a panel, which is my favourite  when it comes to painting pets or any animal with oils.  They allow for smooth brush and paint flow, and I find I can create better details because I'm not fighting with the grain in canvas.

I hope you like Luna's painting.  She certainly was a treat to paint and I look forward to sharing some more pet paintings very soon!

By the way, pet portrait commissions requests are already coming in for Christmas, so please don't delay if you're thinking of having a painting made of your dog or cat, or any other pet.  I paint these pet portraits from your photos and the process is simple. Message me through the side link for more info.

P.S.  Here's a little clip showing some brush work on Luna.

Daydreaming Shih Tzu Pastel Painting

 Rainy Days
8 x 10 pastel on Clairefontaine pastelmat
Carole Rodrigue ©2018

This is my girl Taja and she hates to have her photo taken.  I called the painting Rainy Days because she looks as though she's looking outside longingly during a rainy day.  At least, that's what could be interpreted.  Actually though, she despises having her photo taken and will usually turn her head.  This time, she was just pretending to ignore me.  What a character she is, and I just adore her and love painting her when I'm looking to practice with new mediums or surfaces.  All this though is just to say that if your pet is difficult to photograph as mine is, sometimes the best shots are the impromptu ones.  Your dog or cat just going about their business, looking out the window, playing, sitting outside, all those natural things they do, can make excellent pet portraits.  If your pet won't sit still for a photo, try capturing them doing something they do naturally.  Beautiful paintings can be made with these and they capture your pet's true nature.  Catch them at just being themselves.

With this portrait, I had received new Caran d'Ache pastel pencils as well as Clairefontaine pastelmat and I was giving them a good try.  I fell in love with both the pastel pencils and the pastelmat, and I will be a lifer!  Nothing compares to the Caran d'Ache unless you're using a soft pastel stick like a Rembrandt or Sennelier.  These are beautifully soft and buttery, but the pencils are quite handy for small detail work.  As for the pastelmat, I love its ability to hold a lot of pastel, the ease of blending, and the ability to detail.

If you're unsure about which medium you prefer, oil or pastel, consider that both are excellent. I do charge less for my pastels because my turn around time is less than a more intensive oil painting.  Both have beautiful pigment.  I only use professional quality materials to ensure archival quality.  Pastels do need to be protected under glass but they are almost pure pigment.  There's no need to fear pastels and they do give such an amazing realistic finish and ability to detail.

I'll be back soon with more pet portraits to share.  Thanks for stopping by, and here's a quick video showing some of my pet portraits close up.  Enjoy!

Cat Portrait in Oil

8 x 10 oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2017

After painting a whole string of dogs these past several months, I was thrilled when I was asked to paint this beautiful girl!  She is now passed and lived to a wonderful age of 18.  Her owner is a repeat client who had commissioned me to paint Shelby, the first Malinois I painted.  I can't tell you how much of an honor it was to paint this beauty and also to have satisfied a client so that they come back and ask me to do more work for them!  Once can't ask for more as an artist.

Once again, the client provided a wonderful reference photo which made me light up when just ooh and aah when I saw it.  It was a great high resolution photo with beautiful soft natural daylight.  The softness is what lends to the dreamy quality in this painting and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

Next on the agenda is a German Shepherd commission.  This one will be headed to Germany, so I guess we can say it's a real German, German Shepherd? Wink-wink.

I've also got three pieces I'd like to complete for a a show, so I really need to crack the whip on myself.  I'm getting started right now on a swan.  Thanks for stopping by and I'll be back soon with more work!

P.S.  Don't forget, shipping is free in the Canada and the US if you want your own pet portrait commission and now shipping is also FREE in the UK!

Commissioned Dog Painting in Oil #petportrait

8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2016
Private commission

A few weeks ago I received an email from someone asking me to paint their dog.  When she sent me the photo, I just fell in love with this dog's sweet face.  Her eyes express such a sweet and gentle disposition, as well as an innocent curiosity.  I've seen this look often in my own dog, so I know it well and it just melts my heart.

The pink bow on Gypsy also lends to the sweetness she displays.

Painting this sweet dog was such a pleasure.  I thoroughly enjoyed painting this pet portrait and am so happy that I was able to make her owner very happy by capturing her beloved dog on canvas!

I hope you enjoyed this painting!

Today was a grape day.  I haven't painted them in a long time, so I was due.  I'm not sure why I haven't painted them in suck a long while because they're a delight to paint.  It's now up on eBay.

I also want to let everyone know that it's that time of year and I am accepting pet portrait commissions.  Prices start at $200.00 US for an 11 x 14 oil painting.  Contact me for more info.  There's still time, but not for long so please don't wait!  Here's a portrait I did last year, "Shaggy", and I'm told there were tears of joy when the owner saw her beloved dog's painting.  Please don't wait!

Shih Tzu Pastel Pet Portrait

12 x 9 soft pastel on velour paper
Copyright Carole Rodrigue 2012

Here's the love of my life, my dog Taja.  I painted Taja before and I think I wrote about her, but let me just briefly retell.

Taja came into our home just over two years ago.  She was already one year old at the time, and although I really wanted a puppy, I fell in love with Taja the instant we met.  She's a typical Shih Tzu, full of love and fun. She absolutely adores everyone she meets and thinks that everyone is her "people".  These dogs were bread to be around people and this little one lives up to her breed's reputation.  Taja just loves everyone and has the sweetest disposition I've ever encountered in a dog.  That is unless she meets up with a big dog, but that's a story better left for another time . . .

In case you missed my last post, you can also get a portrait of your pet for only $100.00.  I'm not certain how long I'll be having this limited special for, but do take advantage of a low-cost pastel pet portrait of your fur baby.  Now's the perfect time to commission a portrait for a Christmas gift also! Don't wait until the last minute.  Feel free to contact me with your inquiries.

Thank you for stopping by and I'll be back soon with either an oil still life I'm working on or something in soft pastels.
