Cat Portrait in Oil

8 x 10 oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2017

After painting a whole string of dogs these past several months, I was thrilled when I was asked to paint this beautiful girl!  She is now passed and lived to a wonderful age of 18.  Her owner is a repeat client who had commissioned me to paint Shelby, the first Malinois I painted.  I can't tell you how much of an honor it was to paint this beauty and also to have satisfied a client so that they come back and ask me to do more work for them!  Once can't ask for more as an artist.

Once again, the client provided a wonderful reference photo which made me light up when just ooh and aah when I saw it.  It was a great high resolution photo with beautiful soft natural daylight.  The softness is what lends to the dreamy quality in this painting and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

Next on the agenda is a German Shepherd commission.  This one will be headed to Germany, so I guess we can say it's a real German, German Shepherd? Wink-wink.

I've also got three pieces I'd like to complete for a a show, so I really need to crack the whip on myself.  I'm getting started right now on a swan.  Thanks for stopping by and I'll be back soon with more work!

P.S.  Don't forget, shipping is free in the Canada and the US if you want your own pet portrait commission and now shipping is also FREE in the UK!

A New Alla Prima Oil Painting

Silver & Fig
6 x 6 Oil, alla prima
©2016 Carole Rodrigue

Hello everyone!  I painted this one today alla prima, in one sitting.  I didn't record it though.  It wasn't my intention to paint alla prima today, but once I started I got lost in my work and kept on until it was done.  Had I known I would paint it alla prima, I definitely would've recorded this.

I love these quick little alla prima pieces.  They can be challenging.  Working in wet paint doesn't always turn out the way you want it to so each time is a new challenge.  It's very satisfying when it goes well and you end up with work you're happy with, as I am with this one.

My studio also has a wildlife art piece on my easel.  I started it the other day and it's a larger work that will take more time and will require a lot of layers and then detailing.  It's been a long time since I've done wildlife but I've had the itch lately, especially with birds.  I think I might start incorporating more birds in my still life work too . . .

Hope you enjoyed this one, and if you did, it is now up on eBay for auction.  I will be holding auctions for a little while again but I'm not certain for how long, so do not miss out on the chance to own original art work  for low prices! It's a great way to collect.  I don't sell my work for this low, so don't miss out!

If you want to see more of my work, don't forget to visit my website at

I'll be back soon but until then, I hope you all take care.  :-)

Fall Pumpkins Oil Still Life

6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Hi everyone!  It's that time of year with fall colours and fall harvests, which of course, inspires art.  What's not to love at this time of year with all of the rich warm tones which in a way betray the approaching cold and greys of winter.

This painting is a little 6 x 6.  I keep wanting to paint larger pieces with pumpkins and try various still life arrangements, but can never completely settle on one to paint.  So, I satisfied the need to paint by doing a small quick study.   Sometimes that's all it takes.  Maybe next year I'll have the larger painting that I want.

Right now, I have violins on my mind.  One violin painting sits on my easel waiting to be finished, but I have the urge to start another fun violin piece with an added special something.  I've been asked by many people many times to paint this special something and now I feel the need.  I'm inspired.  I gotta do it.

Until then, take care everyone and hopefully I'll be back really soon with that special painting, but I don't want to rush.  :-)

More Lemons . . .

8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Yes, this one is sold.  I have a deep passion for painting lemons, did I ever say that? I do.  Each time I paint them I learn something new too, which compels me to paint more.  In fact, I did paint more today.  I have so many lemons in the house.  I might bake a lemon cake, with lemon icing.  Yum.

I'll be back tomorrow to share the other lemon painting.  Thanks for stopping by.  :-D

White Wine & Grapes

White Wine & Grapes
10 x 8 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

This painting has taken several days to complete.  I started it last week and it took many layers of paint to complete the satin.  There are so many colors and so much light and shadows reflected. Each layer needed to dry before I could apply another.  And can you believe this is leftover wine from Christmas? I think I'll use it for cooking next week.

This is now up on eBay.

Still Life with Peeling Paint and Lock

TLA No. 2
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

My second piece for the new year is also the second instalment of my TLA (true love always) series. I had painted a slightly larger one a few years ago that was juried into a show and sold.

The memories that this theme brings to me are priceless.  When I paint these, I envision warm sunny days with my friends, talking about girlhood crushes and carving the TLA and heart on trees and fences, writing it in sand, and even in the air with our fingers.  It's wonderful to be taken back to a time that is so heartwarming.

This is now up on eBay for a much, much lower price than what the first one sold for.  Don't miss this one!

Violin on Satin Study

Violin on Satin
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This little treasure  has been on my easel all week.  I made my drawing on Monday and painted it yesterday and today.  It's not a daily painting, but it is still up on eBay for a smashing starting bid.  This is a study and you can be sure that a variation on this theme will end up in a larger painting.  I'm very enamoured with the white satin that takes on a creamy glow in the light, paired up with the violin.  I've always loved violin paintings but was never able to paint them since I don't own one.  This one was borrowed from my niece and I'm thrilled to finally be able to work with a violin in my works.

I will try my hardest to do another piece or two before the holidays.  Until then, take care and thank you for stopping by.  :-)

Tangerine Alla Prima Still Life with Video Demonstration

6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today was a productive day.  The dog had her walk and I painted this little tangerine, AND made a little video demonstration using still photos.  My camera doesn't record, so I'm stuck for now.  :-s

This painting is now up for bids on eBay and you can also view the video on YouTube by clicking the embedded video below.

Three Apples Alla Prima Still Life

Three Apples
8 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

As stated in yesterday's post, I painted apples.  When in doubt, always paint apples.  I'm kidding; there were no doubts, just a lot of apples.  That's not to say that I don't ever have doubts with my work.  I think all artists do.  It's just par for the course to doubt one's work and one's direction every once in a while.  If not, I don't think one is growing as an artist.  I also destroy works I'm not satisfied with at times.  Again,  think all artists do this too.  I just thought I'd share a little about this because many people are under the impression that every work comes out as intended.  Several years ago, I was relieved to read an artist interview in a popular art magazine where this very successful artist stated he often hated some of his works and many he found to be inferior.  These he would paint over.  That's encouraging for any artist and shows that one is able to recognize growth and potential, as well as areas that need improvement.  I have painted over many canvases or destroyed them.  Some have ended up as impromptu palettes holding gobs of paint.  Hopefully, this is something I will keep doing in the future.  :-)

The apples in the above painting were painted today, alla prima and I took many still shots as I painted.  I don't have any quality method to record so I'm taking photos for now.  I'm going to be putting together a little video demo with these stills.  They still show my process quite nicely.  It'll be posted and shared here and on YouTube as soon as it is done.

I hope you like this little painting, as well as my long paragraph.  I plan on discussing more of these art issues in the future.  Ta-ta for now!

Cozy & Warm, a Still Life to Warm and Soothe

 Warm & Cozy
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Since we're already covered in snow, and seeing all the snow Buffalo got this week, I really felt the need to paint something warm and cozy.  I arranged these things together, the cinnamon and pinecone, hot tea, and checkered cloth to create the atmosphere I wanted to evoke.  I'm satisfied with how this turned out.  It's not a daily painting however.  There was just too much detail to paint and many layers to create the right effect, but, it is still listed for the price of a daily.  Folks, this is a steal!  It's now up on eBay.

P.S.  I hope everyone in Buffalo stays warm and safe!

Bosc Pear No. 6 Alla Prima Daily Painting

Bosc Pear No. 6
7 x 5 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I had purchased many pears last week for the still life with the Indian tea pot, so I thought I use one of these today for a small alla prima painting.  I'm loving painting those pears! Now I need to try and think of something to paint for tomorrow . . .

Indian Teapot with Fruit Daily Painting

Teapot with Fruit
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I painted this little gem today with the low light coming in from the window.  I felt this light was the best choice due to the teapot.  It's handmade in India, dented and crooked, and has a very low sheen.  I'm not sure what it's made of but it's not shiny like a polished silver.  I kept all of the lighting throughout the objects very low and soft to complement the pot.  The bosc pears and apple made an appearance again.  What it is that I love to paint about these fruits so much? I really have no idea.  I just love painting these.  The bosc pears are my favourite to paint in all the pear varieties.  It must be the varying colours that come with them, from tinges of green at times, to deep golds and browns.  They're just as delicious to paint as they are to eat.

This is now up on eBay for a very low starting bid.  Have a great night!

Grackle With Apple, Oil Painting

8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

When the grackles show up at my bird feeder, I can't help but be in awe with all of their rich iridescent colors.  What's not to love with those shades of cobalt, viridian, and mauves? They're a joy to watch and I welcome them at my feeder whenever they please.

This piece is now up on eBay for auction.

I also want to pay my respect on this Remembrance Day and Veteran's Day to all the soldiers who have served, past and current, and those who gave up their lives so we may have ours.

Grapes & Gold Cup Still Life

Grapes & Gold Cup
6 x 6 Oil Daily Painting
Carole Rodrigue 2014

Today was a grape day.  I haven't painted them in a long time, so I was due.  I'm not sure why I haven't painted them in suck a long while because they're a delight to paint.  It's now up on eBay.

I also want to let everyone know that it's that time of year and I am accepting pet portrait commissions.  Prices start at $200.00 US for an 11 x 14 oil painting.  Contact me for more info.  There's still time, but not for long so please don't wait!  Here's a portrait I did last year, "Shaggy", and I'm told there were tears of joy when the owner saw her beloved dog's painting.  Please don't wait!

Bosc Pear Daily Painting

Bosc Pear No. 5
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This little pear was painted today, alla prima.  I love painting pears, especially bosc pears.  Their color lends to a classical look that beats other pears.  I love their sexy shapes and how they sometimes appear to have a curvy bottom. This one didn't, but I love the long progression to the top of the pear, appearing ever so graceful. It's now up on eBay.

Also, I created this short video slide show of a painting I had created last year.  So far, I'm unable to film movies but I will try to create slide shows that show a painting's progression. I painted quite differently then as I'm always changing and evolving.  Now I always tone my canvases and supports. Have a look at my video on YouTube, and I hope you like it.  Please leave a comment on YouTube if you wish.  Thanks!

Alla Prima Cloud Study

Cloudy Sky
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I thought I'd take a little break from still life to paint this little cloud study.  It was painted alla prima, meaning wet paint into wet paint.  It's much cooler than Blogger shows and much softer also.  It is now up on eBay too.  As for tomorrow . . . I'm feeling the call of fall . . .

Silver Tea Pot & Hydrangea

Silver Tea Pot & Hydrangea
8 x 10 alla prima oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Labour Day weekend! I had a fabulous weekend in Toronto with family and couldn't have asked for a better time.

This painting was done alla prima today using a tea pot from a set that was given to my parents on their wedding.  My mother passed a few years ago so having things from her around the house are very dear to me and help keep her memory close.  Of course hydrangeas are just everywhere right now and I absolutely love them! They're the last big show before then end of summer, and they do put on a great one for quite a while.

I hope you enjoy this one.  If you do, it's up on eBay now for a low starting bid of $49.99.  Have a great day and I'll be back with more art!

Apples & Books Still Life Alla Prima Painting

Apples & Books
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This still life was such a joy to paint! I've painted the last couple of pieces on Richeson gesso panels and I love working on these.  Taking good photos is another issue.  Because of the smooth texture of the support, it doesn't matter which camera I use and how much I try, I keep getting a glare.  I think I'll try a lighter painting next . . .  This one is now up on eBay.  Thanks for looking!

Blue Bottle Alla Prima Still Life

Blue Bottle & Fruit
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This blue vase caught my eye a while back while browsing in a store and I knew it had to come home with me.  It's been waiting to be painted for a while now, and I'm so happy I finally got around to using it in combination with fruits that were in the kitchen.  This painting was painted alla prima, in one sitting.  It's now up on eBay if you're interested, and there are close up shots there as well. Thanks for looking!

Two New Works

Royal Albert, Teapot, & Hollyhock Bloom
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Tomatoes, Onion, & Bottle
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Summertime has cut somewhat into my painting time but I did manage these two as well last week.  The first one with the teapot is now up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of only $49.99,  and the other one was sold within an hour of the painting being completed and is on its way to its new home in California.  I can't tell you how much fun it is to sell something while the paint is still wet! So, don't miss your chance on the teacup.  If you want it, you can click here to see it on eBay.  Have a great day!
