Dead Bird Oil Painting, A Darker Theme

Fragile, 8 x8 Oil, Carole Rodrigue ©2016 -Available
I had absolutely no plans to do this painting this week.  I hadn't thought about it for quite a while.

I had photographed this bird as a reference after it sadly crashed in my window last summer.  It was heartbreaking to find the little guy.

This week, after I completed the Boxer painting, my plan was to work on a new piece featuring a crow.  For some strange reason, once I got in my studio to start the crow drawing and composition, I impulsively turned to references of my poor bird and immediately started working on it.

Later that night, I found out that well known bird artist Ajay Brainard had passed away from his battle with cancer.  Ajay painted the most wonderful paintings of dead birds, all of which were emotional and left you thinking and wondering.  Although we were friends on Facebook, we didn't actually know each other personally, but I've always been a big admirer of his work. Ajay was far too young to be taken by cancer and the art world will have a huge hole left in it.

While I was working on this, another artist friend who had won her battle with cancer, told me that she felt a strong connection with this piece.  It was personal to her and spoke to her.  After I completed the piece, she suggested I call it Fragile because it stirred memories of her battle, and that it would mean so much to her if I did.  I agreed.  My mother was also taken by cancer a few years ago, and my best friend recently lost her husband to cancer, shortly before Christmas.  I could really empathize.

These are painful moments that connect people on some deep level that can't be explained.   Was there some sort of Jungian connection to Ajay's passing on this same day I started painting this? I don't know.  We only talked about art a few times on social media and I followed his art.  I really can't say I knew him.  I do believe, however, that we are all connected on some level.  I think similar experiences bring people together for unknown reasons.  My friend who survived cancer was immediately drawn to this painting for some unknown reason.  I've painted a lot of things, but this is the first time I've had this reaction to a piece.  Maybe it's the dark subject matter.  I don't know.  I did hesitate painting it for a long time because of the darkness it conveyed, even though countless realist and classical artists have painted dead birds and animals before.  I'm certainly not the first one.  Maybe this was just the right time for this painting.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  I am planning on that crow painting, and hopefully complete a swan piece I had started.  I promise it'll be lighter.  :-)

A New Alla Prima Oil Painting

Silver & Fig
6 x 6 Oil, alla prima
©2016 Carole Rodrigue

Hello everyone!  I painted this one today alla prima, in one sitting.  I didn't record it though.  It wasn't my intention to paint alla prima today, but once I started I got lost in my work and kept on until it was done.  Had I known I would paint it alla prima, I definitely would've recorded this.

I love these quick little alla prima pieces.  They can be challenging.  Working in wet paint doesn't always turn out the way you want it to so each time is a new challenge.  It's very satisfying when it goes well and you end up with work you're happy with, as I am with this one.

My studio also has a wildlife art piece on my easel.  I started it the other day and it's a larger work that will take more time and will require a lot of layers and then detailing.  It's been a long time since I've done wildlife but I've had the itch lately, especially with birds.  I think I might start incorporating more birds in my still life work too . . .

Hope you enjoyed this one, and if you did, it is now up on eBay for auction.  I will be holding auctions for a little while again but I'm not certain for how long, so do not miss out on the chance to own original art work  for low prices! It's a great way to collect.  I don't sell my work for this low, so don't miss out!

If you want to see more of my work, don't forget to visit my website at

I'll be back soon but until then, I hope you all take care.  :-)

New Video and a Giveaway!

Happy New Year my friends!  In the video below you will find my first completed painting for 2016 and you can watch it's creation in this short demonstration. I'm having a blast recording these speed painting videos and will keep making more.  I'm still learning the ropes in movie making and they're far from perfect, but I'm still putting them out there.  I'm learning the ropes as I go along. :-D

I'm also very excited to announce a contest I'm holding.  For all those who subscribe to my newsletter and for current newsletter subscribers, your name will be entered in a draw to win the above original oil painting on June 1st, 2016! Current subscribers need to apply again; your names will be automatically entered.  I will then hold a new draw every six months, so it's a pretty good idea to remain subscribed.  ;-)

I have so many exciting plans for this coming year and I'm just getting started.  Be sure to get my newsletter so you can stay up to date!

For now, I have new work I need to get to so I'd better run.  Stay tunes, and by the way, you can see the painting in the video HERE as well as place an eBay bid HERE.

New Oil Painting Demo! Santa Baby III

Santa Baby III
6 x 8 oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015
Available, please contact

Hello!  I painted this little gem and recorded the process.  This is the third yearly Santa Baby painting.  In the first two years, I painted the same ornament, but I wanted to change it up this year and this little guy was perfect.  It also satisfied my desire to paint a snowman too.

Recording this wasn't without issues.  I record using an iPad, using several sort clips that I have to upload as I go along otherwise I run out of room on the iPad.  I stitch all the clips together when I create the video.  Finding the right angle to get a good view is difficult too, but these things will all fall into place as I do more.

The biggest issue I had was loosing my video four times as I worked in iMovie.  I cannot stress how stressed I was! I'm putting it mildly when I say that there was a lot of frustration and I felt like banging my head on my desk many times.  The worst was the fourth time I lost it.  I was done, music and all.  I was just inserting the very last tile for the music credits, and boom.  My Mac froze and the only way out was to force a quit. Every time I've had to force a quit, I lost everything.  Can you imagine my pleasant surprise when I reopened the app and saw my full video there intact? I wanted to dance on my desk!

So, that's my latest adventure in movie-making.  And do you think this would deter me from making more? Nope.  No way Jose.  I'm planning the next one already . . .  Stay tuned!

If I don't get a chance to post again before Christmas, please consider this post as my Merry Christmas to everyone.  I thank you all so much for your support and for having visited my art blog throughout the last year.  Thank you, and many blessings to you and yours!  xoxoxo  <3

New Video

I hope everyone's been well!  I've been super busy at this end but have been finding time to paint.  I promise to show a new piece very soon!

In the mean time, I created this little video with a compilation of some of my paintings.  Most are oil, some are daily paintings, some are bigger works, some are acrylic, and some pastel.  Yes, it's fun to work in various mediums, but oil is still my favorite.

There's also a speed painting video that I'm planning as soon as I have some logistics figured out.  Once I do, they'll be up and I'm also planning perhaps tutorials, such as an e-book with accompanying video.  I've got so many plans and I hope to implement these soon.

Please have a look at my video, give it a like, and PLEASE SHARE!  Yes, artists need you, art lovers,  to share our work.  I thank you all for stopping by and I'll be back soon! Until then, take care!

Clementines and My Favourite Blue

Clementines & Cobalt Blue Dish
8 x 10 Oil

Cobalt blue is my favorite of all the blues.  Nothing compares to rich depth of blue you get when you apply it on a canvas or panel.  I also love it mixed with other colors for greys and blacks.  Nothing compares.  It is the most expensive of the blue paints also, but I always splurge with my blue because, well, I just love it.  That's all.  I love it with lemons too, as well as with the rich orange of these clementines.

I hope you love it too.  It's on eBay now with a couple of other pieces.  Have a look here.  And thanks for stopping by.  Have a great Easter weekend and Passover.  <3

Lemons & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

I love to paint lemons, I cannot lie! I still hate how the Blogger photo uploader makes photos look.  This photo looks much better on my website and on eBay.  Psst, there are close up shots on eBay too. I attached the link to my "Me" page below the photo.

But it is true, lemons have become a favorite of mine to paint.  I've got a couple of larger projects on the go right now, but I think I'm going to paint a much larger still life with lemons.  Like a 24 x 24, or maybe even larger.  That would be something!

Hope you like this one!

Clementine Alla Prima Still Life

6 x 6 Alla Prima Oil

I painted this little one yesterday afternoon, alla prima.  I had no intention of painting since I was so busy having finished the wine piece, but I had purchased these lovely little clementines that had the stems and leaves. We rarely have them here with the leaves and stems so I did take many reference shots for future works.  The leaves were already beginning to dry, so this one had to be done quickly since it was painted from life.  The  clementines are all done too, as in they've been eaten.  Enjoy!

White Wine & Grapes

White Wine & Grapes
10 x 8 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

This painting has taken several days to complete.  I started it last week and it took many layers of paint to complete the satin.  There are so many colors and so much light and shadows reflected. Each layer needed to dry before I could apply another.  And can you believe this is leftover wine from Christmas? I think I'll use it for cooking next week.

This is now up on eBay.

Violin on Satin Study

Violin on Satin
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This little treasure  has been on my easel all week.  I made my drawing on Monday and painted it yesterday and today.  It's not a daily painting, but it is still up on eBay for a smashing starting bid.  This is a study and you can be sure that a variation on this theme will end up in a larger painting.  I'm very enamoured with the white satin that takes on a creamy glow in the light, paired up with the violin.  I've always loved violin paintings but was never able to paint them since I don't own one.  This one was borrowed from my niece and I'm thrilled to finally be able to work with a violin in my works.

I will try my hardest to do another piece or two before the holidays.  Until then, take care and thank you for stopping by.  :-)

Pomegranate & Copper Alla Prima

Pomegranate & Copper
8 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It dawned on me today how quickly this year is coming to a close.  I'm not sure how many more paintings I will be able to create in 2014 but I'm hoping to do several more in the next couple of weeks.  This one was painted today, alla prima, and I found the pomegranate to be one of the prettiest I've seen in a while.  The red was vibrant and the whole fruit just perfect.  It's now up on eBay.

Spoons Daily Painting

8 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today I was in the mood to paint something in silver, so I painted these silver spoons I have.  These are part of an old set that was gifted to me and they are very special.  It's unfortunate that I don't often have the occasion to use them, and when I do have diner parties they're usually a larger crowd so I still don't get to use them.  At least they do get to appear in my paintings from time to time.

This is now up on eBay.

Tangerines & Bowl Daily Oil Painting

Tangerines & Bowl
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It's that time of year when tangerines are everywhere, so it's only natural that they should pop up in art, mine included.  I love them combined with this bowl.  This is now up for auction on eBay.  And did I ever mention how I usually post close up crop shots on eBay?  Have a great day folks! :-)

Santa Baby II Christmas Daily Painting

Santa Baby II
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue 2014

Hi everyone.  I realize that it's not yet Thanksgiving in the US, but I still went ahead and painted something Christmassy.  The reason is, this will be listed for one week, then with shipping, this is the perfect time if someone wants it for decorating this year. Or a gift.  :-)

I painted a Santa Baby painting last year which is in a collection in Texas.  Each year, I will paint one Santa Baby piece only, so this is it for this year.  I'm making this theme a tradition.  I might paint another Christmas themed piece, but this is it for Santa Baby.  Will he be making it down your chimney?  He's now available on eBay.

Bosc Pear Daily Painting

Bosc Pear No. 5
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This little pear was painted today, alla prima.  I love painting pears, especially bosc pears.  Their color lends to a classical look that beats other pears.  I love their sexy shapes and how they sometimes appear to have a curvy bottom. This one didn't, but I love the long progression to the top of the pear, appearing ever so graceful. It's now up on eBay.

Also, I created this short video slide show of a painting I had created last year.  So far, I'm unable to film movies but I will try to create slide shows that show a painting's progression. I painted quite differently then as I'm always changing and evolving.  Now I always tone my canvases and supports. Have a look at my video on YouTube, and I hope you like it.  Please leave a comment on YouTube if you wish.  Thanks!

Apple Fairy Daily Painting

Apple Fairy
10 x 8 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's painting is a garden fairy that's been in my garden for several years now.  I've always wanted to paint her and I don't know what took so long.  Apples, of course, are in season so what better subject to complement my fairy?

If you enjoy this one, you can click here to view the eBay auction.

Royal Albert Tea Cup and Lemon Daily Painting

Royal Albert & Lemon
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm back.  I took a week off from painting last week getting ready for and giving art workshops to about 75 students from all over the province of Ontario.  The event, Vision Art, (sorry, link in French only) was held at Laurentian University in Sudbury and put on by the Conseil Scolaire Catholique du Nouvel Ontario for over 200 students.  Activities took place over a three day period and I must say that I was so impressed with the talent the students exhibited.  I was also very honoured to be selected to be on this team, instructing art to our youth, our future leaders. Each and every one of those kids were amazing and it was a real joy to work with them.

Now, my first painting this week was inspired by a Royal Albert tea cup I found at a vintage shop in Toronto's Distillery District.  It was exactly what I had been looking for so I couldn't pass it up when I saw it.  Who could leave behind such a beautiful cup?

This is now up on eBay for bids if you're interested.  Thanks for stopping by!

Bag of Lemons Daily Painting Still Life

Bag of Lemons
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

For today's daily painting, I was in the mood for cheery, yellow lemons.  This is of course painted alla prima, and I find yellow paint tricky when painting alla prima.  I'm quite satisfied with how this finally turned out and I love the mood in this piece.  I hope you like it too.  It's now up on eBay.

Mango, Alla Prima Oil Still Life

5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Yes, it's true, I haven't painted many dailies lately.  I've been painting other larger pieces as well as working on this commission pictured below.  I'm somewhat easing back into the dailies again starting with this alla prima mango.  It is now up on eBay.

The painting below is a large piece that was a private commission.  It is now on its way to its new home and I hope my client will love it more in person.  There's a deep, rich red around the pear that the photo doesn't capture.  The combination of the colours in the pear, along with this dark red that fades to black is absolutely beautiful.  I plan on doing more similar fruits in the future using 18K gold leaf.

I hope you enjoy these two pieces!

Bosc Pears Alla Prima Oil Still Life

Bosc Pears No. 3
8 x 10 Oil, alla prima
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

I'm working on a larger commission this week, a 36 x 36 oil still life of one single bosc pear.  I'm still working on it but while waiting for paint to dry today, I thought I'd do a little 8 x 10 of some of the pears I have. I just love doing these bosc pears, and I'm thinking of experimenting with some gold leafing with these soon.  After this commission I'll give it a try and see how it goes, but I have some wonderful ideas for adding gold leaf to these.

I hope you like this one.  It is now up on eBay.  Have a great weekend!
