Still Life with Peeling Paint and Lock

TLA No. 2
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

My second piece for the new year is also the second instalment of my TLA (true love always) series. I had painted a slightly larger one a few years ago that was juried into a show and sold.

The memories that this theme brings to me are priceless.  When I paint these, I envision warm sunny days with my friends, talking about girlhood crushes and carving the TLA and heart on trees and fences, writing it in sand, and even in the air with our fingers.  It's wonderful to be taken back to a time that is so heartwarming.

This is now up on eBay for a much, much lower price than what the first one sold for.  Don't miss this one!

Onion & Silver Oil Still Life

Onion & Silver
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2015

Welcome to 2015 and my first painting of the year! Last year, I painted over 92 paintings, mostly small works, but a few were larger works that took several weeks to create. For this year, I decided I need a slight change in direction. By this I mean that I won't be working on "daily" paintings anymore. Instead, I'll mostly paint 8 x 10 sizes and will work on these for 2-3 days, trying to produce 2-3 pieces a week.

Rushing to get through a piece in a day wasn't cutting it for me anymore and beginning to take the enjoyment out of the process. I would rather take more time and enjoy what I'm creating rather than groan just to get something done by the end of the day. These are still studies done in less time than I normally take to work on full pieces.

For this reason, my prices will go up slightly higher for the paintings I list on eBay. The prices are still waaayyyy below what I should be charging just the same. Hopefully, this will help me create better pieces as well. My eBay pieces are still a fantastic way for anyone to be able to afford original oil paintings for a bargain price.

May everyone have a great year and thank you for being a part of this artistic journey with me.  I appreciate every person who takes the time to come and look at my art.  Many blessings to all of you!  <3

Two New Works

Royal Albert, Teapot, & Hollyhock Bloom
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Tomatoes, Onion, & Bottle
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014
SOLD

Summertime has cut somewhat into my painting time but I did manage these two as well last week.  The first one with the teapot is now up for auction on eBay with a starting bid of only $49.99,  and the other one was sold within an hour of the painting being completed and is on its way to its new home in California.  I can't tell you how much fun it is to sell something while the paint is still wet! So, don't miss your chance on the teacup.  If you want it, you can click here to see it on eBay.  Have a great day!

Cup'a Joe Daily Painting

Cup'a Joe
5 x 7 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

It's a cold rainy day here today, so coffee is what was inspiring, in more ways than one.  This is now up for bids on eBay.

I'm also laying the foundations for a new larger piece as I mentioned yesterday.  I'm planning out what I'll draw first but I might be decided by tomorrow what will go on canvas.  First, I need to tone my canvas so it can be ready to work with tomorrow should I decide to start painting.  I usually always tone my supports with a good layer of burnt umber washed out with turpentine.  This process requires a well ventilated area, but it's so well worth it.

Why would you want to tone a canvas? First, I can't tell you how many times I've seen a painting with parts of the white canvas show through.  This looks amateurish and takes away from the painting.  A professional looking piece must be completely covered, unless the white parts are deliberate and incorporated into your painting.  Preparing a canvas by toning it also reduces the amount of time required to complete a painting since there is already a layer of paint completely covering your support.  This enables one to begin layering more easily, keeping in mind the fat over lean rule. The toning also creates a richer glow to your colours. The stark white of a canvas can distort colours.   Some prefer the brightness of colour painted directly over a white canvas, and that's okay too. With toning, you can also leave parts of the tone showing in your work, or uncompleted parts if you will peeking through, that give an interesting finish and can make parts of a painting glow. Should you for some reason also miss a little paint in one section, this ground colour will still keep your piece unified.

Artists work with different colours for toning, but usually earth tones are preferred.  Some work with darker yellows, and others work with burnt sienna, some with grays.  I prefer burnt umber.  I start out by applying a little paint, but not too much.  If I need more, I add more.  This canvas shown in the photo below is a larger 18 x 24, so I used about three pea sized drops.  Maybe four.  I then take turpentine and saturate a bristle brush.  I like to keep some of my muddy turps for this rather than wasting it.  Once my paint-turpentine wash is completely covering my canvas, I let it sit for about three minutes.  I then take a rag and gently wipe in circular motions.  It's okay to leave streaks and uneven marks.  This can make for an interesting background should you use transparent glazes.  Once the toning has dried, usually the next day is good, then I'm ready to begin drawing on the canvas.  I like to use white pastel or chalk as you can see in the photo on a smaller dry canvas.

So, that's part of my process.  I find toning invaluable in my work and I've discovered the process has been much more enjoyable since I started toning my canvas.

Thanks for stopping by!

Teacup & Yellow Pansy Daily Painting

Teacup & Yellow Pansy
6 x 6 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's daily painting, a teacup with a pretty yellow pansy.  I'm really getting into these teacups and I'm thinking of doing one per week.  I don't think I'll buy one for each week, but perhaps borrow one here and there.  I hope you enjoy this one.  If you do, you can click on the above link to bid on eBay.  There are also close-up shots on eBay.  Now, I'm off to drink a nice cup of Earl Grey from this cup.  Have a great evening!

Onions & Mortar Daily Painting

Onions & Mortar
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Today's daily had to be onions.  I have never painted a red onion before, but I was compelled to capture the red tones in this today.  I think red onions might compete with apples for a favoured subject matter.  ;-)

Now I'm off to working on my giant piece again.  The clock is winding down and I really need to get this done by this weekend.  If you like Onions & Mortar, you can click here to bid on eBay. Thanks, and have a great day!

Daily Painting with Golf Ball, Iron, and Tee

Golfing
10 x 8 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

Okay, I'm not a sports type of person, but I had so much fun painting this one today and love how it turned out! The photo doesn't do it justice.  The photo uploader in Blogger always changes the appearance and colors for some reason.  All the same, this is a great little painting and would make a great gift for the golfer in your life or even for Father's Day! If you like this one, you can click here to bid.  Have a great day!

Silver & Fruit II Daily Oil Painting

Silver & Fruit II
8 x 10 Oil on hardboard
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

After having painted Silver & Fruit last week, I enjoyed the piece so much that I decided to paint a complementary painting but with  a different piece of silver and a pear instead of an orange.  Red pears are such a luscious deep shade of red, and oh so fun to paint! I've been deliberately neglecting shining my silver too, I must admit.  There's something about those dark shades and other colors that show through tarnished silver that make them so appealing in art.  I suppose I will have to shine everything soon, but for now I'm enjoying painting these tarnished pieces.  If you would like to bid on this one, you may click here.  Thanks for looking!

Hello friends, I can't tell you how great it feels to be painting again.  I just love painting lemons, almost as much as apples, so I felt compelled to paint one again. This one has just been listed on eBay with a low starting bid of $24.99 US.  If you like this one, please click here to bid.

Now it's back to painting a very large 48 x 48 canvas I've been working on for a show I'll be participating in this June comprising of only very large works! Silver Creamer & Pear Daily Painting

Silver Creamer & Pear
8 x 10 Oil
Carole Rodrigue ©2014

This week has been a hectic one, cutting into my painting time but I did finally manage to paint this daily.  It can get a little difficult to find subjects to paint, so I must keep looking around the house to see what I have.  Well, I have this magnificent silver set so it's a no brainer to paint some of its pieces from time to time.  It is now up for auction on eBay with a low starting bid of $49.99.  Have a fantastic day and I'll see you soon!

Green Apple Painting a Day

Green Apple
5 x  7  Oil

Today's daily painting is a nice bright piece with a green apple.  Sometimes, cloudy winter skies give one the need for something bright, so I painted a bit of cheer in a brighter painting.  If you like this one, it's available through eBay auction.  Thanks for stopping by!

Lemon & China Cup No. 3
5 x 7 Oil on hard board

Here's my lemon passion expressing itself in today's daily painting.  I must say again that I don't know what Blogger has done to their photo upload program lately, but I really don't like the look of the photos when uploaded.  I hope they fix this or I might just stick with my website blog only.  Please do check out my website or the eBay listing for a better look at this painting because it really is a very nice little piece.  You may see this painting on eBay by clicking here.

Apple & Copper Pot Painting of the Day

Apple & Copper Pot
5 x 7 Oil on hardboard

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labour Day weekend.  I took time off from my labours and relaxed for a bit, although I did begin a larger painting.  This little treasure was painted today for my daily painting.  I found this old copper pot a few years ago at a second hand store and it's such a great little thing to add warmth and life to paintings.

This painting is available through auction on eBay by clicking here.

I did work yesterday, Labour Day, although this one was  a private commission.  You can have your own commission as well.  Just contact me through my website by clicking here.

Lemon & China Cup No. 2 Daily Painting

Lemon & China Cup No. 2
5 x 7 Oil on masonite
Carole Rodrigue Copyright 2013

Today's painting of the day is another with a lemon.  I'm just loving painting lemons lately but I'll move on to something else tomorrow or Sunday.  It's not easy thinking of something new and fresh to paint every day.  I'm also beginning to truly enjoy painting alla prima (painting wet into wet paint in one sitting).  I have to admit that this is something I wasn't fond of before, but it's becoming a lot of fun.  This little treasure was completed in about 1.5 hours from start to finish.  The fun part is learning to let go of every little detail and limiting brush strokes and layers.  It's somewhat liberating, although for larger pieces I will still paint in my slow and methodical way, nit-picking at the details.
